We’ve been working on a group of five poems that will be due Tuesday 5/15. Many of the kids have already finished most of them during the work time provided. In the coming week, we’ll be using most of the class time for the Zoo Powerpoint assignment. When that is finished, we’ll be returning to poetry to finish up by the due date. Here are the five poems:
1. Common-uncommon poem. The purpose of this is to learn to end a poem well, a skill that can be transferred to any kind of writing. Students should write about something common, but end by seeing this common thing in a fresh, uncommon way.
2. Image poem. Write a poem that has a separate image in each stanza, with a minimum of three to five stanzas. A crowded setting like a restaurant is good for this. When all the separate stanzas are read together, the reader can see the larger picture of the whole restaurant. Other topics: track meet or other sporting event, county fair, school cafeteria, a classroom.
3. Structured rhyme poem. Create a structure by choosing a number of beats per line. Then choose a rhyme scheme (pattern).
4. Choice poem. Write a poem of your choice.
5. Haiku. Write a haiku using the guidelines from the video: a haiku introduces two elements (usually natural) on the first two lines. The last line shows the relationship between these two elements, preferably in a fresh, uncommon, unexpected way.
